Koelnmesse 3.0: Enviroment

  • What measures are being taken to ensure a sustainable energy supply to the exhibition centre?

    • The site’s future energy supply is a key aspect in the planning for Koelnmesse 3.0 , and a sustainable energy concept has been developed to this end. The aims are:

      - to introduce more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly types of energy

      - to reduce energy consumption through efficiency measures, thereby optimising Koelnmesse’s CO2 footprint

The new thermal power station, the use of district heating, energy-saving ventilation in the halls, better insulation, and an LED lighting system are making a huge difference. Koelnmesse cut its CO2 emissions by more than 3,000 tonnes in the first year (2017) – that is equal to the emissions of more than 400 homes.

Sustainable is now the new normal at Koelnmesse: buildings such as Confex® are designed in a way that has allowed them to attain Platinum certification (the highest possible) from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) even before they are built.

  • What does the investment programme Koelnmesse 3.0 mean for the tree population?

    • The required tree felling measures were checked by the City of Cologne’s Environmental and Consumer Protection Department, and the felling permits issued. The 30 trees felled in the construction of the Zoobrücke trade fair car park were included in the building project’s offsetting calculation, meaning that no further replacement trees needed to be planted. Despite that, Koelnmesse used the opportunity to take part for the second time in the “Ein zweiter Wald für Köln” (A Second Forest for Cologne) project, through which the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald e.V. conservation group and the City of Cologne are reforesting an area on Merheimer Heide. Koelnmesse’s donation this year made it possible to reforest a total area of around 250 m². The new woodland will form part of a green corridor that extends from the enclosed woodland of the Königsforst to the meadow of the Flehbach and Bruchbach at Gut Mielenforst.

Koelnmesse 3.0: Project

  • How high are the investment costs?

    • The plans involve a total investment of more than Euro 700 million by 2030, which Koelnmesse will finance with its own capital and through capital markets.

  • What does the name Koelnmesse 3.0 stand for?

    • The aim of the Koelnmesse 3.0 investment programme is to create the world’s most attractive inner-city trade fair grounds by 2030. The name "Koelnmesse 3.0" comes from the target year 2030, by which time the measures should be complete.

  • How was the investment programme Koelnmesse 3.0 developed?

    • Koelnmesse has secured the support of renowned experts to help develop the necessary measures. From the very beginning, the plans were developed by an interdisciplinary team of architects, city planners, energy planners and experts in logistics, transport and technical building equipment, and in consultation with the relevant municipal institutions and offices. In the process, the strategic requirements of future trade fairs, conferences and events were borne in mind, the structural and technical condition of the trade fair halls was established and evaluated, and city-planning developments in the area around the Koelnmesse taken into consideration.

  • What is the investment programme Koelnmesse 3.0 all about?

    • Koelnmesse 3.0 is the name of an investment programme that Koelnmesse developed with the goal of creating the world’s most attractive exhibition grounds in an urban centre, based on a sustainable strategy, in order to provide the right framework for future trade fairs, events and conferences.

The measures include both refurbishment and modernisation work on existing halls and the construction of new buildings, specifically: the Hall 1, Confex®, the Terminal and a new multi-storey car park. The project does not focus primarily on increasing the exhibition area. Instead, the emphasis lies on the qualification of the existing areas, the optimisation of the flexibility of the fair grounds as well as the strong interlinking between the trade fair and congress as a sustainable business model.

      Koelnmesse 3.0 includes:

      - Modernising and renovating, focusing on the southern grounds and in particular on technical renovations to the sanitary facilities, ventilation and air conditioning systems, among other facilities.

      - Improving the traffic and parking situation. This includes building a new multi-storey car park to compensate for the loss of parking spaces as a result of the development projects planned in Cologne on the right bank of the river Rhine.

      - Enhancing the attractiveness of the halls and the surrounding area through measures such as planting green areas, lighting and facade design, as well as improving the layout of paths from the car parks to the exhibition centre.

      - Improving facilities by providing access to digital marketing opportunities for trade fair participants.

      - Building the new Confex® hall, a combination of a trade fair, congress and event venue that will host new formats that are a fusion of conferences and exhibitions.

      - Building the Hall 1. Offering greater flexibility, the new venue will link the other trade fair halls at Koelnmesse and the new Confex®, and opens up a completely new spectrum of events and formats.

      - Constructing a new, central entrance terminal for the southern halls as an attractive east-west boulevard to replace the current entrances and the Congress Centres East and West.

  • Why was the investment programme Koelnmesse 3.0 initiated?

    • New demands on the efficiency, flexibility, attractivity and facilities of trade fair sites are a strong motivation for implementing Koelnmesse 3.0 . As a trade fair organiser, Koelnmesse is today first and foremost a communications service provider with a strong focus on service. Exhibition halls are becoming event areas. Every trade fair ground that hopes to compete in coming years as a top location must meet these new demands.

      Key developments include:

      - increasing "eventisation" of the trade fair business, i.e. growing desire among trade fair attendees for emotionality and experience

      - more rigorous demands by exhibitors and visitors in terms of the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of attending trade fairs

      - growing demand for flexibility for parallel events and overarching formats, for example even more intensive combination of trade fair and conference events

      - a clear demand for strengthening the business location, transport services, catering and hospitality, commerce and trade-fair-oriented service providers.

In addition, the topic of digitalisation has great relevance. In order to remain successful internationally in future, Koelnmesse must rise to this challenge. This includes:

      - digital infotainment (advertising, signage, interactive information systems)

      - mobile applications around the time of and during the trade fairs

      - intelligent, eco-efficient building technology

      - continuous connectivity (Wi-Fi/broadband connectivity)

      - new, marketable, digital-based services.

  • What is the schedule for the construction and restoration measures?

    • The Koelnmesse 3.0 investment programme was launched in 2014, and since then the first sub-projects in the category of renovation measures have already been completed. So far, the main focus of the programme has been on a new combined heat and power plant and the switch to district heating, as well as various individual measures and the renovation of Hall 10.

The construction of the new Zoobrücke trade fair car park is also complete – since spring 2018 it has provided more than 3,250 parking spaces for trade fair visitors, as well as extensive logistics areas on the ground level for build-up and dismantling vehicles.

A competition was held to select the architects for the new construction measures on the trade fair grounds itself. A jury made up of top architects, representatives of the Cologne council groups, the relevant municipal department heads and Koelnmesse representatives selected the JSWD architecture firm’s proposal for the South site in March 2016. Working with the Cologne-based architects, Koelnmesse fleshed out the plans for Hall 1, Confex® and Terminal, and construction on Hall 1 began in late 2018.

Koelnmesse 3.0: Surrounding Area

  • How will the area surrounding the exhibition centre change?

    • In addition to extensive restoration work in the trade fair halls, Koelnmesse is partnering with the City of Cologne to redesign the outdoor space along the street Deutz-Mülheimer Straße and the connection between the new multi-storey car park at Zoobrücke bridge and the trade fair grounds. Our goal is an attractive appearance for the trade fair halls and the surrounding area.

  • What is MesseCity Köln?

    • In the direct vicinity of Koelnmesse – between Köln Messe/Deutz station and the southern grounds of Koelnmesse – MesseCity Köln GmbH & Co. KG (a joint venture of STRABAG Real Estate and ECE Projektmanagement) is developing MesseCity Cologne. The project encompasses six buildings with offices, hotels, restaurants and retail space. Its functional core will be the “Messebalkon” (“trade fair gallery”), which will form a central point on the path from Köln Messe/Deutz station to the south trade fair entrance.

  • What is Cologneo I?

    • Cologneo I – previously called Euroforum Nord – refers to the area to the north of the Koelnmesse grounds. Homes and commercial space are being built on the grounds of Cologneo I.

Koelnmesse 3.0: Trade Fair and Congress Business

  • How is the building work in the urban area on the right bank of the Rhine River currently impacting on Koelnmesse?

    • Koelnmesse’s site in Cologne, on the right bank of the river Rhine, is at the centre of a remarkable urban development scheme, involving a whole host of high-end projects that will improve and enhance the trade fair environment significantly. Construction work is currently under way close to the south halls: project partners STRABAG Real Estate and ECE are implementing the large-scale project MesseCity Cologne. Koelnmesse has maintained close contact with the companies involved in the MesseCity project for a long time in order to prevent disruption and interference during the construction work. A neighbourhood agreement has been concluded. Among other measures, a logistics concept regulates access to construction sites and reduces the impact of traffic in the surroundings of the trade fair where this cannot be avoided entirely despite thorough preparation. The excellent arrival options using the local and long-distant transport networks are still available. As usual, shuttle buses and taxes will be available in direct proximity to the Köln Messe/Deutz Station.

  • Are trade fairs and events affected by the construction and restoration measures?

    • Since 2015, various individual measures for Koelnmesse 3.0 have been under way in the periods between trade fairs. Exhibitors and visitors hardly notice this work at all. It goes without saying that Koelnmesse will keep the effects of the construction work on events as low as possible in the future as well. Construction work in the halls, for example, will be suspended as far as possible during trade fairs.

Koelnmesse 3.0: Traffic and Parking Situation

  • Will there still be enough parking spaces available?

    • Due to the urban development work in Cologne on the right bank of the river Rhine and specific construction work for Koelnmesse 3.0 , parking spaces in the direct vicinity of Koelnmesse will be removed. With around 3,260 parking spaces and a direct, conveniently situated connection to the Zoobrücke bridge, the new multi-storey car park at Zoobrücke will compensate for the loss of parking spaces. At the same time, the amount of car traffic in the districts of Mülheim and Deutz, as well as the entire inner-city area, will be reduced thanks to the direct connection of Koelnmesse to the Autobahn.

  • How will setting up and dismantling trade fairs be arranged during the construction work?

    • There will be no changes to the central, conveniently situated location of the exhibition centre with its rail, air, road and local transport connections.

A logistics concept regulates access to the construction sites and reduces traffic disruption in the area around the exhibition centre. This includes fetching the construction vehicles precisely when they are required and giving close consideration to the logistics for setting up and dismantling trade fairs. The tried-and-tested measures for steering visitor flows will be constantly adapted to the situation at hand.

As usual, the Traffic Calendar of the City of Cologne will provide information about any particular traffic problems in the area around the trade fair grounds. Despite thorough preparation, it will not be possible to prevent traffic disruption entirely.

To minimise any disruption caused by MesseCity, planned by STRABAG Real Estate and ECE Projektmanagement, neighbourhood agreements have been concluded, taking the trade fair schedule as well as setting up and dismantling periods into account in detail.

With the construction of the new multi-storey car park Zoobrücke and its direct connection to Zoobrücke bridge in Cologne, Koelnmesse’s transport links will be improved. The developments will also ease the traffic situation in the districts of Mülheim and Deutz, as well as the entire inner-city area, for the long term.

  • Where can I find current information about the traffic situation in Cologne?

    • You can get the latest overview of the traffic situation in Cologne, as usual, from the Traffic Calendar of the City of Cologne.

In events open to private visitors, the person placing the order can also have tickets issued in the name of third parties.

  • Can I laminate my ticket?

    • We advise against laminating the admission ticket. This can lead to problems with the scanners at the admission control if the bar code is not recognisable through the laminating film. We instead recommend using a plastic pocket.

  • How can I buy admission tickets for the event?
