Satellites and microwave links as resilient fallback options
PMRExpo Summit (DE/EN Simultanübersetzung)

Our dependence on reliable communications networks is growing. At the same time, the risks to these infrastructures are increasing. Cable damage, power outages, technical failures, or deliberate sabotage can result in established communication channels suddenly becoming unavailable. Resilience therefore means maintaining alternative, and as far as possible independent, means of communication.
But what options are available? The key is to create additional transmission paths that operate as independently as possible from existing infrastructure. Satellite communications and microwave radio links offer two distinct ways of adding further fallback layers to communications networks.
This presentation introduces both technologies and demonstrates how they can contribute to the resilience of communications networks.
Using practical examples from satellite communications, it will show how connections can be established independently of terrestrial infrastructure and used as a fallback option.
Practical examples involving microwave radio links will then illustrate how locations can be connected without relying on wired transmission paths, creating additional physically separate communication routes.
The focus is not on choosing between satellite communications and microwave radio links. Rather, it is about understanding the respective strengths and applications of both technologies, and demonstrating how they can make communications networks more resilient.
So that communication remains possible even when individual infrastructures fail.
